Just dropped by Tom Johnson's site and I believe he has only two or three SA's listed. Lakeside Trader has maybe one or two that aren't on hold or sold. Has the SA dagger supply gotten that tight? Charlie

Didn't Pete Seeger write a song about this?

Where have all the SA daggers gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the SA daggers gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the SA daggers gone?
Gone for soldiers every one
When will they ever learn?
When will they ever learn?

Just as some were complaining that the cost of SA's were too high for a common dagger, others were buying them. Now with few choice pieces to pick from some say what happened?

They are in collections worldwide.

Now you got to know someone to get a nice one.

Same thing is happening with HJ's. Forget the price, just try and find a nice one very very tough.

The vast majority of those SA's are also returning home, in Europe that is. Wink
Thankfully, some of these are also travelling to the Great White North. Big Grin
I have heard from many dealers, that very large collections are flying out of the US and will probably never return.
The fact that the US currency has depreciated in value by more than 50% in the last few years, certainly help those foreign buyers.

A case in point.
This is a photo taken of our tables at the last MAX. We had approx 30 SA daggers. 95% were early maker marked with original hangers in excellent+ to mint condition. There were also 8, 9's, and 10's on the rarity scale. Some of you guys may remember.
All were over 1K.
Outside of selling a few to members of this forum the U.S. collectors generally had looks of dismay and even a few comments as to "why so high?".
By the end of the SOS this year they were all gone. 80% to "friendly" European buyers with no look of dismay on their faces. Instead I got "want lists".
Just thought I'd share with you guys a "hands on" experience.
Oh, the Russians vacuumed up the "sleds".

I bought that nice HACO SA from Herr Mann on this site. I am astounded no one else took it at the last price. It was a great deal at $860.00 plus shipping. That one should have gone for a lot more in my opinion. The scabbard had a question on the paint, but I bought the dagger regardless. When it arrives I'll report in.

Just wish I could have got out there, I dont fly to well and its a long flight. I have a little site where I sell all my doubles and bits I upgrade and some russian is buying everything!. The prices in the UK have risen steadily over the last year to the point im thinking they are very expensive. When the exchange rate sorts itself out they will rocket in price over here as the US lot scrabble for bargains in real terms.

Some dealers here have a lot of stock here, the US price dictates the prices roughly in the UK, maybe the UK is on the high side. But saying that the very weak dollar is taking some of the pain out of the natural increases in value in real terms if you buy from the US. A little while ago it was under 1.4 dollars to the pound now it is over 2 dollars to the pound. So as an example the price to buy a chained SS is about what it was a year or two ago providing you look around for the right deal.

Is there any big shows like the Max or SOS in the uk or europe?

Maybe this was covered, but there was alot of SA daggers at the SOS. Hell I bought three daggers to add to my collection one in damascus. There was some good stuff there but much was priced for the (european market) Yes there was repro stuff too, but this seems to be the norm nowdays. Belive me there is PLENTY of repro goodies at the european shows...James

I asked this same question a couple of months ago on this forum. The responses were strikingly similar - Russians & Europeans & low dollar vs Pound or Euro making the daggers depart in droves from USA.

The price has been skyrocketing for a while now but what amazes me is major dealers seem to have no daggers regardless of how high the price. Charlie
