I purchased this dagger along with some other items I posted elsewhere from the daughter of a Vet yesterday. It's a relatively common maker but in uncommon condition. Please excuse the blade picture as it is not as shiney as it appears and all the black motto anodising is present and not washed out.
Jim

Thanks guys:
It's not common nor is it a rare maker. It's kind of in the middle. I also posted this for those who think there aren't still items out there in the hands of veterans or,in many instances anymore, their families. It takes time and effort to dig these items out but to me it's well worth the effort.

The vets daughter told me the only thing her father ever did to the dagger was to put a light coating of machine oil on the blade periodically.
Condition? Yep this one is in "Patrice Condition" Smile

Jim, My compliments for a really very nice dagger. SmileSmile

That works. But I think that for myself I would call Rich's SA dagger: MEGA! MEGA! MINT! (When compared to some comparable Damascus bladed daggers of recent times before they were "restored".) Roll Eyes

PS to Rich: As I'm sure you know, no offense intended. Sometimes you get lucky. And sometimes you don't. And the fact is that corrosion is always a problem, with some parts of the country being more susceptible, and some kinds of steel being more corrosion prone. FP

Hey Jim, that's a great dagger. It seems this particular maker when found are in super condition. I don't know why but I've owned several and seen some lately where the blades were superb and the exterior finish survived beautifully. I remember selling a matched pair of these at an SOS show that were as nicotined as you could find and when pulled from their scabbards were fantastic. I sold them for a high price and they sold for a ridiculous figure after that.

Thanks for the nice comments everyone. The vets daughter told me her father only rarely showed this dagger to anyone but would occasionally apply some oil to the blade. This stuff is still out there for those who want to go for it.

That maker - Gottfried Muller - is the only SA maker where the trademark can be found turned 180 degrees. Here is the other version. Neither rarer than the other as far as I know.

If anyone knows what that thing in the center is, I sure would like to know.

Not sure if this is the same maker,it's on a 1800's shotgun. If so,were the SA's also made in Suhl? And if they were made in Suhl,I guess I'll have to obtain one for my small collection of Suhl made SA's.

Very very nice. Dave it is odd that we see the MM at a 180 degrees variation.

I wish there were small hotel type buys and garage sales in the UK. All we have are boot sales full of glass/books/films/junk ....I have been to many and only ever seen one tatty French bayonet. Roll Eyes

This logo is so odd looking that probably even the guys who did the etchings could go wrong with positioning. It's constructed like Gottfried Müller should be on the top and town's name at the bottom, it's easier to read it like that.
