hallo all.
some time ago I found on an eastern site 'allegro' an early motto sa dag. I put a chip on that auction but I was not 100% sure about the genuinity of that blade so I left the dagger. Still I have the doubt: what do u think ? ![]() |

Looks laser etched rather than acid etched circles in logo way too sharp normally have a slight fuzzy look

I agree. Also, that so crisp logo, with stars and full tail...was used by Eickh?
Again, in the meantime here is jumped out another very early motto dagger: http://www.egun.de/market/item.php?id=1741287 A bit strange that in a couple of weeks two very rare early motto dags come out.... |

This same item was recently discussed at the end of this post: http://daggers.infopop.cc/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/160093573/m/6780087545

The one offered at egun is a fake! I bought this one 3 weeks ago on egun, as the seller offered a 30 days inspection time and return policy (regardless of which reason returned). I bought it ("Buy it now") for 920 Euro. I agreed with the seller to meet at the IWB in Stuttgart, Germany as he had a booth there and I live only 1 hour from Stuttgart away. He agreed to get paid cash in Stuttgart. I had this dagger in my hands and the seller even took it apart. The motto and the makers mark are faked and the dagger is also a parts dagger. The tang showed fresh grinding marks to fit through the opening of the crossguard and also the tang screw looked like it was manipulated with a die to fit the tang nut. I assume that the blade is an original and period, but unmarked one. The Eickhorn logo is laser etched and the inscription is a fake too. The grip fits quite well to the crossguards and in total the dagger looks not that bad (except the motto and the makers mark). I was lucky to get some valuable replies here in the forum before I took the dagger in my hands ... and returned it to the seller. BTW - as so many times I got a great story with this item free of charge. The dagger comes from an old collection from an old veteran, who is still alive. He has this daggers since 1945 and it was always in his posession. I was asking for the name of the veteran to check with him if this story is true. Of course the seller told me that under no circumstances he can reveal his name, as he still has numerous of rare items in his collection. Additionally he doesn´t want to be named as he still today regrets his membership in the party, etc. Bla, Bla, Bla .... |

Looking at just the blade, I am not convinced that it is a fake. Those early large trademark Eickhorns have very precise etchings.

thanks for the explanation, ivbaust.
the pics I posted were taken more or less 20 days ago from the site allegro in poland, and for sure that dagger was a mix of genuine parts with a fake blade (I presume the blade all new, not an old one etched with a fake motto). in the same days (more or less) another similar faked dagger jumped out in germany: we can assume that a new 'artist' specialized in very early motto is born.... now, sit and wait for the next one... |

dave, as i never had the entire serie of the eickh logos maybe I wrong, but the only squirrel without eyes (like these) was in a very different logo.

The blind squirrel is a known Eickhorn fault. It appears that occasionally the acid did not get through the little hole or the hole got clogged up.
It would be good to see this in-hand, and I would say it is fake until then. Dave |

IMO there is no doubt that the makers mark is post war, it has the typical traits that the forgers overlook. The typography is poorly constructed and spaced, the ovals are perfect... period ovals usually have small imperfections in the radius as they were quite difficult to draw perfectly. This was probably drawn digitally. The squirrel does not match the early Eick trademark, note his ears... also, doesn't look acid etched to me either, too delicate and precise.
