i saw an interesting sa dagger today black grip and scabbard nickel fittings with just the hint of gilt and the makers mark was a sailor with a pipe sa marine?
the condition was ex+ with a near mint blade the asking price was £400 $800
how rare are these and should i have bought it?

From your description even if it was only a SA it was probably a good buy cant remember who that maker is but think its a scarce one the black grip suggests Marine and it was cheap at £400 IMO

i am out of touch
a well known uk dealer gives me £280 for any sa i find in good condition i thought he was generous!

I think the maker you are looking at is Perfectum.(CD Schaaff).

the grip was so black i thought it was a 33 ss i asked the price before turning it over to see the sa rune if i had not been disapointed in it not being ss i probably would have bought it or at least tried to haggle

Think Landser is right about the maker Fisher has them at less than 1000 made so probably a 9 or 10 on Mcsaar.Clean SAs are making £350 to £380 regularly on UK dealer sites and really nice ones command more I recently left a bid of £400 on one estimated at £250 wasnt near the final bid of £480 PLUS commission
