I was buying some nazi china wear today and the fellow threw this in for $100.00. I said I would never buy another sharp object without posting it here first but I figured it was worth the gamble. Comments and any idea on value ?

Thanks Jay

From your comments I assume that it is a correct piece... ;o)

The handle is chipped at the top, should I repair that or leave it alone. Same question for the paint on the case ? What do you think its worth ? How does the maker rank ?

Thanks

Jay

I know we're not susposed to give out the McSARR # on rarity so I won't but (hint) they don't get any higher then this. Condition isn't the best but it's still a decent example. I wouldn't do anything to the grip. Maybe lightly clean the blade in sudsy amonia to remove any finger prints. The scabbard might look better if painted but that's up to you. I don't know of any way to remove the rust on it without removing the original finish. I don't think it would affect value. I would say $350 maybe a little more if someone needs that maker.

Don't. It will reduce the value of such a valuable and rare maker dagger. Just wipe it down with a soft cloth and rub the grime and light rust off. You can never hide new paint...no matter how hard you try and it will always raise questions. In my opinion, the scabbard and dagger are well matched and you got a deal most of us never have a chance to see.

Congratulations!

Agreed.
Lightly clean the blade and scabbard only.
As Mark said, it looks "well matched" as it is.
Congratulations on a great catch.
Well done.

Best Regards,
Robert

Thanks for the advice, I disassembled the scabbard and cleaned it with CLR, looks a lot nicer now. I disassembled the dagger (as well) and cleaned it with a light metal polish... overall a bit better !

Thanks Again

so now it really is worth $350?

I have some old SA's and would never consider taking them apart. I think they are best left preserved.

It shows it's age and that's a good thing.

IMO it's not worth what it was as found, and who knows if he damaged the scabbard screws or the pommel nut while taking it all apart.

I think you guys are being a little hard, using CLR on the scabbard to clean the rust off is more to preserve the piece then change it.......

The pommel nut has vice grips marks on it, as well the handle is chipped from a previous owners handy work.

So in other words the damage is done....... taking it apart one more time would hardly effect it (at this point) !

I could understand your comments if it was a unmessed with example, it's not !

It is what it is.....
