Hello all. I am a spanking new member. I would like to ask about professionally ground Rohm which I am about to buy. I'm not a beginner so first you must assume that it's real because i can't provide a photo. the eickhorn logo is against the guard. and the inscription is polished away. the original owner's serial number appears on the guard as well as the scabbard throat and is also engraved. the problem is that someone has varnished the grip. possibly even the original owner. Is this a fatal flaw? Thanks in advance

Is it a SA dagger with a serial number ? Some makers applied varnish at the factory,so as you know a picture is worth a thousands dollars. I mean words.

Eickhorn, to my knowledge, did not varnish grips. Also, be aware that these blades have been faked and the more obvious ones get ground and sold off a ground Rohm daggers. Beyond that, without a picture, not much can be said.

Well the number is as such, xx/xxxx. The varnish is definitely an afterthought. The price is 350 from a friend whose relative brought it back. It is not from a dealer. Oh yes, there is also a nice dress bayo in the deal. I will make the purchase. I just wonder how much the varnish affects the value.

It depends on the beholder. From what you say, it wouldn't bother me at all, but others may find it objectionable. The finish can be stripped, but the grip may look worse afterwards. If the dagger is "real" and in reasonably good condition, plus the bayonet, I don't think the price is bad at all. As noted, photos would help immensely. With them, there would be little, if any, doubt about the autenticity and opinions would be more accurate regarding the grip.

Serialized SA daggers from brigades 14,15,and 16 are not uncommon.I don't really think that in and of itself would affect value.
