I did a deal for this one and received it this morning. Very rare maker and fairly rare gau mark. Where there's not runner marks, there's clear crossgrain, not that you can see it in my photos. Scabbard looks to be repainted, don't know if it's period or not. I'm pretty happy with it, it's a great dagger all round...

Oh... and I've never noticed one of these before inside the clip... anyone?

Hello, sdp! I believe that is a stud that's cast into the clip then "peened" to hold the spring in place. Got one just like it on a very early S/S [Himmler] Regards, Leipzig
P.S. Super S/A! What is the m/m, looks like a stork/goose facing the viewer! |

Hi Leipzig, I'm not sure really, it looks like possibly an ostrich to me? Thanks for the info, Scott

This is one of those GREAT play-on-names makers marks.
It it supposed to be a goose. The name of the family (and company) is Gierling which is related to the german word "gierig" which means "greedy". In germany it was said that geese are greedy, therefore this company used the "greedy goose" to represent their name (and company). I don't think it is conicidence either that the companies initials are in his fat belly! VERY cool mark! Silver Badge #0398 My Avatar = My dagger security system! |

sdp,
Nice find. Interesting, I think the mark had something to do with the fact that they made fine poultry cutlery. Happy Hunting |

That trademark is intented to be a stylised bird as one of heir main lines was poultry scissors.
