Hi All, I was hoping someone would be able to answer some questions for me. I recently obtained a dagger. I know nothing about this kind of thing and I have been doing some research on it. I believe that it is a NPEA. On the top of the handle it has "NPEA NaumburgHerbst1939" on the lower part of the handle it has "N296". On the blade is etched "Mehr sein als scheinen." Also on the blade is "Karl Burgsmuller Berlin". I am very sure that it is original. I work for a police department and a lady's brother died and she wanted to turn in some firearms that were his. This dagger along with another one were in a box with some older firearms. She told me that he was a marine in WWII and there were some other things in the box that had okinawa and some places in germany on them. The handle on the dagger is broken in about three pieces. I am not sure what this would be worth and if there is a way that I can authenticate it. Also I wasnt sure if I should try to get the handle fixed or replace it or if that would lose the value of it. Sorry this is so long but any help would be greatly appreciated. I will try and post some pictures later. Thanks in advance. Also I am not exactly sure how to post pics on here so if I do it wrong sorry.
Nothing I see scares me, but you are going to need better pictures for a decent opinion.
Is there a scabbard / sheath with it ?
If real, the dagger is reasonably rare, so you want to sit on it and not try to sell it until you find out more. Grips can be repaired by experts, but again, sit tight. Post more pictures.
Hope this helps, Dave
