reichstall,

Where did you see one? The only damascus Henckels SA I have ever come across was on E-Bay about a year and a half ago with a $250.00 reserve. The guy didn't really know what he had. All he knew was that the blade had this "watermark" to it. It became a thread here on GDC.

We exchanged e-mails because I was a bidder, and E-Bay cancelled the auction. He told me that E-Bay recieved several "reports" of the auction being offensive, but we all know what that meant. I told him the only way to be sure of what the dagger was really worth would be to send it to an expert. I gave him the names and e-mails of several dealers, and he decided on Tom Wittmann. He later e-mailed me back saying Tom was very excited, and offered to purchase the dagger. I got a thank you in the mail too. Wish I could have afforded that dagger.

The dagger I spoke of (I think) is listed on Wittmann's site under "Special Offerings"--the second page. This photograph is from Mr. Wittmann's ad. The price of the dagger is $8,995.

It is #SPO-069.

Interesting. Wonder why an obvious presentation or special order piece would have an RZM mark along with the makers mark? Any thoughts? Charlie

charlie,

This was discussed extensively in the GDC thread--and your question is a valid one. It brought many opinions, but most collectors agreed that any SA member could order damascus steel as an option. These were not Honor or Presentation daggers mind you. They were purchased by SA rank and file who were a bit more well off than the average brown shirt. Here is what Wittmann says on this:

quote:
It is extremely rare to find a Leader SA dagger equipped with a genuine Damascus blade. According to the rules of the SA, though, as long as there were no changes to the outside of the dagger, anyone with the appropriate pocketbook could order a blade of this quality.

That one doesn't look that attractive with more of a "large watered" design and black letters. Wasn't the lettering usually "raised"?
