Hello,

This Tschako has been seen here on the forum before, in different hands. Now it has come into mine from PVON and I am presenting it for consideration after some restoration work on the rather hard to come by buffalo hair parade plume. The buffalo hair is incredibly fine and a bit hard to work with, but very strong.

Side:

The original elastic band to hold the plume is present, but has lost its elasticity over time.

Typical officer's interior. The leather's lacquer has dulled with oxidation over time.

Bill,

A very nice Tschako! The buffalo hair parade plume looks great. I have one with a stiff elastic band like yours. Heck, I am just happy to still have the original band.

Thanks George.

The plume was pretty matted and showing its age so I committed a conservator's sin and cleaned it. The buffalo hair is SO fine, much finer than human hair, it is really hard to get it to lay correctly. They must have used some kind of starch or sizing on it when these things were made to hold it in shape. I wasn't about to try anything like that on it though Eek.

Bill,

An absolutely beautiful tschako, super addition to the collection. I was wondering who snagged it from Paul.

Dear Macki,

Sorry it behind the glass now and I dont want to pull the kokarde out for fear of messing up the plume again. Here is a quick sketch of hof I connected the two so that they would fit into the slot provided on the Tschako.

Sorry,
William Unland

Hello,

I have never seen one.

It would be difficult to make, having examined this one carefully, and buffalo tail hair is probably not the easiest material to find these days.

That said, if there's a marlet it will be reproduced. i think this is too small a market to attract them.....yet.
