Johnny:
The dress bayonet is apparentely a real one. However it looks like someone attached part of a tinnie? to the grip in an attempt to enhance the value.

Johnny,

At first glance I'm inclined to agree with Jim, but that doesn't mean this particular piece isn't completely period. The grip emblem seems to be somewhat beaten up whereas the obverse grip plate looks pretty good, a seeming conflict. If this emblem was affixed at the factory, it would have been pinned inside the grip and would likely exhibit a slight wiggle when touched.

Most postwar additions were simply glued into place, can you see if there's any evidence of epoxy underneath the emblem?

I do not have the item to inspect, it is currently being sold on Manions. I guessed it was an "enhanced" piece, but thought I would post it here for all to enjoy. Big Grin

Hey, I bought one of those 18 years ago and mine is as fake as a 3 dollar bill. In fact I'm including it in my collectors guide on Dress Bayonets. Gee I sound like Wayne T. Smile There are some good bayonets out there that have emblems on the grip but I don't think this is one of them. In hand inspection is the best on these. Maybe Ron W. will comment on this as he has seen alot more of these than I. Oh yes, I agree the bayonet is probably good, the emblem not.
