JC,

Wayne Techet shows a picture of this style etch with the same regiment on page 136 , example "B" of his book "German Etched Dress Bayonets, (Extra Seitengewehr) 1933-1945". Value rating according to Wayne is listed as "scarce". The fact that the etch is dedicated to a Jager Regiment makes it more desirable in general.

Scarce etches, in Wayne's book, are listed as roughly $500-$700 depending on condition & other value affecting details. The ersatz stag grip might make this piece more valuable.

Can you get a better shot of the borders?

Billy,

Thanks a lot for your answer.
I can't take other photo. This bayonet isn't mine but is for sale in France.
The seller want to much money for it...

JC,

Just as an observation, the leather buffer looks sort of thick & the second "9" looks too low but maybe I'm stretching. Would be better to see closer pics to have a better idea. Wayne would have a better idea of pricing, remember his book & it's prices are maybe 5 or 6 years old.

If you compare the etch on page 136 to this one and look at the border closest to the cross guard, you will see several obvious differences that I am concerned about.

Look at the spacing between the top and bottom oak leaves and the edge of the etch. There should be a fair bit of space inside the etch, whereas on the one pictured here, the oak leaves almost touch the top and bottom edges.

Not good signs.

John,

I see what you mean. I thought there might be a difference because JC's is a short model & the one in Wayne's book is a long.

Billy:

I would expect the short and the long etches to be very similar except for the bookends which would be shortened or cut off in the case of the short ones.

I don't have any Horster etches in my collection, but I do have a short Holler, and as Wayne points out, Holler did make a lot of the etch patterns for Horster. My short Holler etch is identical to the long etch except for the elimination of the back book end, just as I expected.
