I'm new to bayonets but they are very interesting to me and I want to start a collection hopefully. From what I can tell by comparing the details to pictures on the internet these are Mauser bayonets, one is possibly a first pattern 1884/98 bayonet and the other I have no idea.
I picked the two of them up at a local gunshow. Here are pictures of the first bayonet which I think may be a 1884/98. The only markings are the manufacturer and the regiment numbers. http://i284.photobucket.com/al...nets/22/DSCF3302.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/al...nets/22/DSCF3305.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/al...nets/22/DSCF3306.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/al...nets/22/DSCF3308.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/al...nets/22/DSCF3312.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/al...nets/22/DSCF3313.jpg Here is the one I can't identify. There are manufacturer stamps and a faded serial number on the crossguard that I can only make out the last 3 numbers of. Also the bayonet fits very loosely in the sheath it came in. http://i284.photobucket.com/al...nets/11/DSCF3292.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/al...nets/11/DSCF3294.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/al...nets/11/DSCF3295.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/al...nets/11/DSCF3297.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/al...nets/11/DSCF3299.jpg I'd appreciate it very much if someone could help me identify these bayonets and what type of Mauser they would fit on. |

Your first bayonet started out as a 71/84 and later was converted to a 84/98 this is the first true 84/98. Both the scaber and bayonet is unit marked to the 51 Reserve Regiment. A very nice Imperial era bayonet with a lot of history. For a newbie you did good.

Thanks for the information. Is it possible this bayonet saw any combat?

The 51 Reserve Regiment was part of the battle harden 12 Reserve Division. This group suffered heavy losses in some of the biggest battles of WWI such as Meuse-Argonne,Verdun,Flanders, and the Somme. I would say it's a good bet your bayonet saw action.
