While I wait for our Italian members to participate,

The Italian dagger I have with a similar date is XVIII which was identified as the 18th year of the Facist era which began in 1922. So, the date on my dagger indicated 1939/1940. Yours might indicate 1938 under that reasoning. So, this is when the person would have received the dagger perhaps. The time line is correct.

Any other opinions/ guesses?

Jim

My guess would be the day he entered the party, the dagger is the 1939 set up with the leather hangers so it all kind of fits.

hi to all,
i agree with Jim,
in my opinion the dagger is a gift to someone, and the date is the day of the gift, not a date of birthday, with the JM named signed on is probably the name of the man who make the present
