I would say the water customs is probably right up there.

Indeed, try doing any kind of search & you will come up with very little in information or images. I believe that Skipper Greenwade (WAF)had one that was recently sold by T.J. Unfortunately I missed seeing it. Although the images would not have been very good they would have been better than anything else available unless one is fortunate enough to have old catalogues. Both you & I have been collecting for six years & like me you may not have any.

The postal was one at one time a dagger that I wanted more than any other. I missed one at a fair price & was working toward that goal when they suddenly went beyond my means. Whilst not really rare I would say that they are uncommon, especially in collectable condition. Much underrated & given the choice between a chained SS & a nice postal I would pick the postal every time.

Yes they are VERY nice and have all the early qualites that any TR collector loves.

Bought this off e-ban just as they disallowed any TR items, at the time is was a lot of $$ but that was 4 of 5 years ago. Now they are big $$$$$

That is a superb piece!
I remember Gordon selling his for just $2200 (if I remember correctly). Absolute snip, I was miserable for days Smile

Wittmann has never seen this done on a postal before, he stated it was probley done by a "anal" postmaster as a property mark.

After that length of time I think you were very fortunate. Much of the finish still on the pot metal clip too! Very little wear & certainly one of the best I have seen. I have only seen a couple in a condition that I should consider acceptable & even those I wouldn`t want have been nudging 4K

I would say early SS daggers by:

Puma
K&M
Kober
Louper
Backhaus
Schuttelhofer

Those by Jacobs are a bit more common, but try finding one. Big Grin

Eric,

I forgot F.Herder.

Bertram and Pack are a bit more common, but not easy to find.

Guys:

How about the Railway Water Protection Dagger, listed in the Eickhorn catalog and supposedly only used on a few barges that transported rail cars.

There is a fantastic set of pictures of this dagger on Craig's site.

It looks like no one wants to touch my post on Railway Water Protection Daggers.

Is the unspoken story here about the Atwood versions that came out in the 60's?

If they aren't real, why would they be listed in the Eickhorn catalog as a for sale item?

John Z is correct. The Railway Water Protection is probably the rarest production dagger.
The Postal School Short (often mis-labeled EM) Dagger is next.
Government Fisheries Dagger (if it exists)
Sea Custom's Officials Dagger next (real Ones)
then the NPEA Leader's Dagger

Ed:

I believe that Craig has one pictured in his archives. Unless that one is Bob McCarthy's, it would make two that are known 'real'.

I have owned three over the years, two from veterans. While rare, not in the league with the RW Protection or the Sea Customs.

Feldherrnhalle daggers would have to be up there, esp the white handled variety.
