Hello,

I would like to ask if the GDM runners just take it on the easy side with all the disappearing threads or if there will be a solution coming up in regards of all these disappearing collectors informations.

I just would like to mention many members took the effort to take pictures and share informations for other collectors. This is also the sense for a forum.

We are all very very upset by this continuous loss but what can we do? We could all stop posting but then we would have nothing at all.

Or . . . you can continue to post, and later on, still have nothing at all! Big Grin

It's damn sad when the warning shot was ignored.
How can we as serious collectors post an interest to a ****ing headstone?

Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do with Groupee. The Groupee software is designed for short term topics. As set up, it auto deletes topics after 30 days. We have this option off, but still run into indexing problems from time to time that kills the older threads. Now for the good news, we have the new server up and working. We are loading the software needed for the website and have the bare bones set up. We also tried loading a backup from 2002, and were able to access the old threads. It will take some time to get everything loaded and merged together, but we should be able to recover most of our topics. It's just going to be a slow, time consuming process.

I know this is going far afield and is complicated. It would be a great deal of work and take a great deal of time, but if the better threads and photos could be assembled into a book format, even softcover, all would be saved and the information continued would be invaluable. It wouldn't have to be anything fancy, just good photos and interesting information. Also, there have been photos posted here of items I have never seen anywhere and such a book would be of benefit to the collecting community as a whole. Detailed photos of some collectibles here are and have been unique to the site. Proceeds could go to maintaining the website.

Vern, once loaded will the original links lead back to the "lost" topics?

Does each year have a backup file?

Vern,

This sound very promising indeed Cool. But when you say that you are "loading the software needed for the website" is it also Groupee which means we are still up against a time clock or is it a different software which doesn't have that problem?

Cheers

Vern:

Over the years, I have been very involved in systems conversion and upgrade projects. It always takes way more time and effort than originally planned and you always encounter unforeseen obstacles.

I don't envy your task. Our constant whining about the issues doesn't help either.

You have my sympathy here for a thankless job.

I, for one, appreciate what you are trying to do.

What, if anything, can we do to make your job easier?

Disappeariung Threads and Photos has been an issue for years and all we receive is lip service. The obvious solution years ago was to get rid of Groupee with all of its other problems. Since Vern won't do that, I believe that most people will eventually give up and want to do their posting elsewhere. Raymond Griffith's new site certainly appears promising-

I do find that it speaks volumes when a query from a moderator goes unanswered......

I have deided that I shall not post any further images or results of research here until the situaltion improves. There's no point if it will be lost in a few months. I shall continue to visit & comment on threads but there is little point spending time typing out threads, sorting & resizing images for any kind of a reference & help to others under the present conditions....

Cheers
