The bag itself is what is referred to as a "Griswold bag" used in airborne drops.

It was mainly used to carry the M1 Garand rife in 2 pieces, but it was quickly determined that having to re-assemble a gun on the battle filed is not the best idea so many of the bags were extended to allow the rifle to be carried intact.

I think those mag pouches are for the M-14, and that rounded pouch is the mess kit pouch for the M1926 backpack.

Nice pieces!

In my experience with the Garand rifle, these are not WWII items, but later perhaps. In all my reading's, which have been extensive, I have never seen a reference to these type bags. Korea, maybe? It is interesting in any event. Any other thoughts out there?

I agree Mark. I have what I believe is a proper WW II vintage carbine bag. I'll post pics. when I get time.

Korea would make sense with the 1950 dated mag bags.

Jerry, I have seen the pouches before but it was the rifle bag itself that caught my attention. I would like to learn more about it.

Jim, I have "drop bags" that came with some of my M1 carbines, but I have never seen a drop bag for any Garand, at least so far. Not even a mention of one.

Hello Jim,Look up M1 garand griswold rifle bag and you will find a lot of info on them, they had 3 types, this one is a type 2.Later they sewed a sleeve on to make them longer to hold the rifle with out breaking it down.
