bought a collection of stuff about 3 weeks ago.these pictures were part of the lot.from the little that i know the pictures in uniform and with weapons are desireable.i have 7 pictures all are in uniform,some are with rifles and pistols,one has a written history-wounded at gettysburg.can anyone tell me the difference between a tintype and a daguerretype?how rare are these pictures?they are all in great shape.here are some pictures of the pictures.thanks paul

Wow Paul,
Those are great images! With these early photos having armed and identifying uniform bits (as well as actual ID) really enhances the value for collectors.

The art of photography was just in its infancy during the time of the US civil War, so you see a few different of the early photo techniques used. the tin types are actually sort of exposed onto a blackened tin plate, while the daggs are done on more silver, giving it a mirror like qulaity, which looks like the positive when held correctly. Both are technically negative images so identifying marks may read backwards (eg; SU instead of US )

They are fragile images, so don't try to clean them. I heard a horror story of a dealer that bought a confederate General tintype, only to give him a blast of windex to clean it up, and he watched as the image melted away before his eyes...
