Hello,
I dont usually mess around with guns but I got a good deal on this one. My big question is what is this wooden thing hanging off the rear sling fittng? The seller called it a "chuck" with he said is an armorer's acceptance stamp of some sort. Is that true? Id like to know before I put it in the forsale section. thanks D |

I have a simlar tag on my Type I, and was told that it was an inventory tag, placed on by the armory for accounting purposes. I think that it's cool the way they used wood for the tag, and also tied it so carefully!

Hi, I have heard from one of our experienced collector that this is surrender tag. It was required to ground the Mum and put this tag on.
I need to get a referance to that. D |

I've heard the tags were for inventory or arsonal purposes. Of course that doesn't mean I'm correct!

From memory I'm go to with this combination:
The tags were temporary ID markers for captured war material. That was inventoried, and then given to returning servicemen. Or was otherwise disposed of. I don't know if I still have the picture or not. But I also have a recollection of a picture of a stack of swords being or just surrendered with tags. And I've seen then other tagged items as well, using whatever materials seemed to be at hand. FP |

Based on picture 2, does this look like a Type 99?

The receiver markings in photo 3 show "type 38".

I have had many of these same surrender tags on
Japanese swords that I have acquired from the Pacific front Vets. The sword tags almost always have the soldiers family name and rank. Chuck Duke GD #0028 |

Fred Prinz's reply is correct from what I've always heard. I've personally gotten several from veterans with the tag still attached and was told that it was an inventory tag.
