Does anyone have any idea what type of ammo this is? I've had it for years and I've never seen anything that resembles it in the books i have. My guess is European but this is strictly a guess. I don't see any marks on the carrier. Just what is the purpose of it? It doesn't look like an MG belt, the metal Japanese one comes to mind. Any help would be apreciated.
Thanks,
Ray

My suggestion is a mag charger for a mod 1937 Italian Breda machine gun or a similar design. The gun was fed from a tray , the cartridges coming from the charger. As to caliber, could be 6.5 Italian, 7mm or 8mm. Maybe miking bullet tip will give you a clue. My best guess.

"Small Arms of the World" does indeed show several "Breda" MG's with strange feeds to commence with a Model 1924 Light MG in 6.5mm. It doesn't appear that those rounds are more than 7mm but as BarryG suggests, mike them out to make sure. Barry has made a really good guess I think.

Barry and lloyd, thanks for your replies.I don't have that book but will look for a copy at the next gunshow. Thanks also to my friend Andy for your email. the bullet measures 6.5mm with a casing length of 52mm.I did see a photo of the Italian Breda but the ammo is held in a strip more like the Japanese MG's. Andy was thinking more in the line of French or Belgium WWI. I know there's a book on head stamps,if anyone has it and could check it out i'd apreciate it.

OK, check out:

http://cartridgecollectors.org/headstampcodes.htm
Site has head stamps from all over. The "SMI" is indeed Italian.
"SMI Società Metallurgica Italiana, Campo Tizzoro, Italy "

"Small Arms of the World" is 768 pgs long or at least was in my older volume. It has many, many firearms and is indispensable, least to me.

Just a guess Raymond from reading the info at that site. September 1936? Lord only knows, I sure don't. BTW, I enjoyed the research on this. I am presently attempting to get results for an interesting one. "Wehog" is found on purportedly repro TR railroad eagles but NO original is known to exist!

Regards, Lloyd

Perhaps September of 1936 ?

Once again, I am amazed at the power of forums and the Internet to identify stuff

OH, one further thing it "may" be. Some sort of Italian stripper clip? Beats me but I do know Italy and Japan both had some strange looking MG's. "Small Arms of the World" has a Japanese training MG that is weird as all get out! Guess if it works that is all that is needed. I prefer MG 42 myself.

The BREDA MG 30 had a hinged magazine that was filled with these clips, it was a 6.5 x 52 round. The MG 37 used the german 8 x57 round.

Thanks Edmond. At the next gunshow I'm going to see if the dealers that have full auto have a BREDA for display.
