It took seven months to get this Luger here from Canada due to all the red tape. But I think it was worth it. In closed are excerpts from noted Luger book author Jan C Still.
Dow Congratulations, you have a Luger marked to one of the rarest and most desirable of all Imperial German Machine Gun units. M.G.SS.ABT.8./2.K.67. signifies: Maschinengewehr-Scharfschützen-Abteilung 8., 2. Kompagnie, Waffe Nr. 67. Machine Gun Sharp Shooter units were first raised in 1916 and were hand picked from experienced combat machine guntroops. They underwent intensive training at special schools directed toward the use of the machine gun in attack and wore a metal badge that represented a Maxium 08 Machine gun and belt. During World War I this Machine Gun unit was part of the First Garde Division and battled in Russia and France. On Sept 26, 1918, it was swamped by the opening of the American Meuse-Argonne offensive. Its Machine Gunners may have been among the 147 soldiers captured or killed by Sargent York. It was rated one of the very best German shock divisions by Allied Intelligence. Please supply the Lugers serial number so I can add it to my data base. Posts: 3,255 Dow Outsanding display of a 1916 DWM marked to a M.G. sharp shooter abteilung. In my opinion this unit is the most desirable of all Imperial unit marks. It is also rare with 8 reported. I have a M.G.SS ABt Luger also marked to the 8 Abteilung. See page 312 Central Powers Pistols, the histories should be the same. Thanks for posting Jan __________________ Jan C Still Site Owner - Operator ![]() |

Congradulations on a very rare and desirable luger. I collect unit marked lugers but have only been able to obtain one machine gun unit marked weapon. Yours looks to be in great condition. What's the story on the holster ?

Nice score Dow.Thats a keeper in anyones book.
Never argue with an idiot, he will only drag you down to his level and beat you with experience. And remember the early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese. |

Thanks for the replies. The holster is a dated 1915, Carl Trenner Berlin maker mark and has a Gardi Depot mark. Overall holster is in great condition.

Dow, most Lugers in Canada of this period are bringbacks by Canadian soldiers after the first world war, due to our restrictive and prohibitive gun laws.
I would be looking for a Canadian connection as to where your Luger was originally picked up. Congratulations on your pistol. It is one that we in Canada are prohibited from owning, except in the rare grandfathered instance. |

It does not get much nicer than this when you can find a MGSS marked 84/98 to go along with your MGSS Luger.
