Hello Everyone,
I recently purchased an Egyptian FN49. I was under the impression that the egyptian 49's fired 8mm ammo, same as the K98's. Does anyone know how i can verify the correct caliber??
Thanks
Nazzman

Hey Paul,
Thats what i figured would eventually happen. I am pretty sure it is chambered for 8mm, but not willing to take the risk.
Seen what can happen when you fire the wrong ammo. Not something i am looking to experience for myself.
Thanks
Nazz

If it's marked with the Egyptian crest you can be assured that it's original caliber was the 8mm Mauser (7.92)

Those with these markings use 8 x57 mm

Some Egyptian imports were rebarreled by the importer. If the tube has the same age as the receiver (and possibly some pitting) it’s probably the original 8mm barrel. I have both the sniper and non-sniper Luxembourg contract rifles in 30’06. Once adjusted correctly a reasonably pleasant rifle to shoot and the 8mm should be about the same (the 7mm contract rifles give the lightest recoil but non corrosive ammo is harder to find).

If I remember it correctly the Egyptian rifles have the one piece firing pin and could conceivably slam fire. The later 30'06 rifles have the two piece firing pin, and I don't remember offhand what the 7.65mm/308 reworks or 7mm rifles have. FP

Does anyone know how difficult it is to rebarrel the 8mm FN49? I mean compared to like an AR15 that doesn't require headspacing.
Thanks

Sarco often has complete barrel and gas tube assemblies in mint condition - I would go that route
