I was always told that the rounded bottom red cross were not original. I have seen period pictures of the pointed but never of the rounded shield and if you do a search of DRK helmets here on the forum all the ones that people say are good are the pointed. Sellick can you inform me why this rounded shield is good? I only ask so I can educate myself since a drk helmet is very high on my list of wants and if I have been passing up good ones because of the rounded shield I will be a little ticked with myself :P

im in agreement , the decal appears one of the aged toned ones you can buy, rare if it is real, but doubt it

These seem to be of either a love/hate affair. I have a couple helmets in my collection having the round bottomed shields and have attempted to research them amongst collectors relative to validity. The best I can say from what I have learned is that the jury is still out on them. They are either liked or disliked. The input ranged from true war-time applied decals to immediate post-war (50's/60's) through 80's reproductions. A period pic showing one in use would be a great plus. To date I myself have yet to see one, which means absolutely very little (DRK helmet images are rare to begin with).

I collect civilian helmets including those of the DRK. My own thought on these is that I'm not disposing of the round bottom versions that I have, they will remain as representative examples of a potential TR helmet. But future DRK acquisitions, for my collection at least, will need to be of the pointed decal version until stronger evidence appears to suggest war-time issue.
Regards,
Don

hi donald,,,i have found an example with the pointed shield in Ludwig Baer's book on german helmets,,not a rounded one,,i would tend to accept that the rounded style is a very good reproduction until further research proves otheriwise...Robert

From what I have seen, good ones it shouldn't have the thick black border, it should go from white to the helmet with no or little transition. I was always told, and any of the period pictures show, a decal like the one collectors guild sold.

The one Collectors Guild sold was a DD pointed shield, the helmet isn't in the best condition but I still wish I hadn't missed it. Here is the link, hope it works.

Robert,
There are also reproductions of the pointed shield version without the border as well. Many are of poor graphical content. The helmet that M.E.E. has posted currently resides within my collection and is a rarely encountered DD example.

Don that is one nice helmet, real DRK helmets are hard to find and nice to see, let alone something as rare as a DD. I'm not a helmet guy but do collect DRK and really wish I hadn't missed that one.

It does look much better than the pics from the site. The site pics looked like it had gobs of rust all over it. That actually looks pretty decent. Nice snag!
