Here's a Japanese flag currently on ebay. At the top of the flag, a rectangular space has been left clear of any kanji.

A similar thing has been done on the flag in this link, but the area appears to have been cut and stitched, and it's on the left edge.

Does anyone know why and for what purpose this has been done?

Regards
Russell

On the flag from the Collectors Guild my guess is it was modified as a cape? The cut out intended for the neck? On the flag posted perhaps a name of a signer was deleted for who knows why? No longer a friend, dead or previous owner didn't want his name known.

Thanks Jareth. My thoughts for the Guild flag were the same as yours. But when I saw the other one, I wondered if there was another significance as to why this was done. So far, I haven't seen any others like these.
