At an auction recently I was tempted to stray away from the usual bayonets I collect and bought this Katana.
I'm pretty sure it's OK but, as this was an impulse purchase, I would appreciate any advice and comments. Any further photos required, please let me know. |

That is a real nice military blade. The sword hanger with it is very hard to find. Nice score.
I an not sure about the color of the scabbard though. Is it black or brown? If it is black it has been repainted. If it is a dark brown paint it is original military production. The style of the scabbard and mounts are the early army style. You have a nice WWII Japanese army sword friend. "Insanity is heriditary. You get it from your kids." Quote from Ronald Regans diary. |

Thanks for your reassuring comments Steve.
The scabbard is a green/brown colour. |

All of the above information is correct except for the comment regarding black scabbards. I have had a number of black scabbard shin gunto mounts over the years. these are attributed to officers of the naval landing forces. The Kaishingunto mounting was not suited to combat considitions. Many period pictures show Naval Landing Force officers wearing the army shin gunto mounting. By the way, a nice pick up. Bob "A man needs to know his limitations" Dirty Harry Gold Badge #263 |

Thanks.
Have been looking into getting the tang signature/markings translated, but not really sure where to start. Also found a folded up piece of card inside the handle. Photo attached. ![]() |

Don't have a clue what it really says. Steve "Insanity is heriditary. You get it from your kids." Quote from Ronald Regans diary. |

TO HAVE THE TANG INSCRIPTION TRANSLATED, TAKE A GOOD PICTURE RIGHT SIDE UP. THE TOP OF THE PICTURE WILL BE THE AREA JUST UNDER THE CUTTING EDGE AND THE BOTTOM WILL BE THE END OF THE TANG.
THE PAPER WAS INSERTED AS A SHIM TO TIGHTEN A POORLY FIT HANDLE. IT HAS NO SIGNIFICANCE TO THE SWORD EXCEPT TO ATTEST TO THE DIGENERATION OF TALENT FOUND MAKING AND MOUNTING MILITARY BLADES AS SKILLED WORKERS WERE INDUCTED IN TO THE MILITARY.
