I am trying to learn a bit about my first miniature dagger. I have collected full sized standard versions for years, but I am a total novice with miniatures. I would very much appreciate assistance in deciphering the scabbard engraving as well as any suggestions as to its ballpark value. I will begin with a shot of the beautiful red/orange grip.
Always seeking personalized, named, or unit-marked militaria!
The dagger, which came directly from the veteran who brought it home, has two shortcomings. The first is a bit of a wave at the tip, perhaps from being used as a pry tool at some point.
What makes the dagger interesting to me is the engraved inscription on the side of the silvered scabbard. Unfortunately, as luck would have it, the silvering has bubbled into the engraving, making it difficult to read. I will post several shots and share what I can read under higher magnification.
A closer view - This is the part of the engraving I just can't decipher. I believe it appears to read "Ballan - Beglai Fahrts" perhaps..but I have no idea what that might mean or if that is even close...
The second part of the inscription is readable under magnification, but unfortunately is almost completely covered by the scabbard silvering interaction with the engraving. With careful study, this part does read " Okt. 1938 DDAC Krefield". So if this refers to the Auto Club, would this have been a prize for a race or ??? Any ideas are welcomed. Oh yes, its overall length in the scabbard is 256 mm or just over 10 inches. Any ballpark estimate of value in this condition would be especially appreciated also.
I believe your nice miniature engraving says, "Ballon Begleitfahrt." In other words for the accompanying motor vehicles to a balloon journey.
A nice unusual presentation. I think that the bubbling effect is common on some of these finishes but nevertheless, a good original piece for your collection.
