means in English:

To prove the old fatherland the (= my) faithfulness
I gave it (= the old fatherland) during hard times gold for this iron.

The Italians did this also during the 20's or 30's. My grandmother sent her gold wedding ring and got back one of steel. It had an inscription along the lines of "gold for steel".
