MOUNTAIN BATTALION GEMONA NEVER .....??? DAUR I am having trouble with the last word only, text appears on a silver marked alpine shooting award..and appears to be the battalion motto, but NEVER WHAT? Many thanks
EDIT...It appears to mean "BEHIND", I eventually found this site on Italian Alpine Units Mottos, I also would like some help in translating the units history if possible, this site lists dates but is rather hard to translate, Gemona History Here is a picture >>>>>
Degens...I am sorry it took me so long to respond...reason being...I have no clue...but I have several co-workers with Italian as a first and second language...I will call one of them in the morn and find you an answer...and again...sorry for taking so long...your SteinMeister...Roland.

Roland, No problem at all, after all it is GERMAN daggers.com . I just thought one of our Italian contingent might have the answer!, I have managed to glean most of the answers I was looking for from the interent but from what I can gather from my limited Italian is that the Gemona regiment was amalgated into another, possibly "JULIA" ?. What I am not sure about is when as this might give me a clue as to this medallions age. Thanks for looking anyway and dont go to too much trouble on my behalf, this came as part of a lot and I like to know everything I can about the things I pick up. Regards Jon
Degens...I am still waiting for one of my friendly amigos to call me back...the moment one of them does...meanwhile...I want to offer a guess...guess only mind you...I think it stands for May Day...I think it is a May Day medal...hopefully we will soon find out...till then...Roland.

Degens: My Italian is also limited and I can't derive anything more out of this than Roland has. You might want to directly contact a forum member here who posts as The Doctor. He is located in Italy and is bi-lingual. Jim

Roland, You are encountering the same problems I came across and the same conclusions, I eventually managed to find out the MAI DAUR stands for " NEVER BEHIND " and is the regiments motto. I am still trying to find out when the Gemona regiment ceased to exist and in what year it was amalgamted so if any Italians come across this post, I am still interested. Thanks for the suggestion Jim, I will leave it for a couple of weeks in the hope the Dr see's this post rather than trouble him via e-mail, but I appreciate the pointer .
Hello DAUR is in fact not Italian, but Friulian, the language spoken in the Friuli area, the region around Udine where also the town of Gemona (from which the Batallion took its name) is. MAI DAUR could mean "never behind" but it is probably better translated as "never backwards". Stefano
