paulbear, a correct translation is partially not easy as the text cannot be totally correct the way you have written it. And the pic is much to small that I am able to read it from the pic.
I will try to write the text correct:
Herrn J.Schefer gewidmet in Anerkennung seiner grossen Verdienste und(??) zum Ehrenmitglied ernannt (does not sound correct german!?) S.H.M.V. St.Gallen, Arbon.
Transl.: (To) Mr. J.Schefer dedicated in remembrance of his high merits and(?) for the nomination to honor membership S.H.M.V. (I would assume this is an abbrevation for any private union) (at) St.Gallen (town in Swizerland), Arbon (also town in Swizerland, at the Bodensee).
To see if the translation is correct or if it is necessary to correct it I would need detailed pics of every part of the inscription.
Regards,

I would translate "Annerkennung" as Recognition so than it would more or less read "In Recognition of his great service and named to honorary member" - makes sense.

goldfasan, thank you very much. You are totally right. Remembrace = Erinnerung and recognition = Anerkennung. Sorry for my mistake! Where have been my thoughts??? My thoughts might have been erroneously on the "remembrance" inscriptions of etched bayonets....
Thank you for putting it right.

Wotan, kein problem - although my family background is german and I lived in germany on an off 20+ years I really have to think about particular words and their meanings when it comes to translations.

Regards
Horst
