The best i can make out because the piece is uncleaned and it is slightly rough in some places as the silver plating is lifting around the engraving.

Two lines the question mark is that I can not be sure about the e.

"Die Ue(?)iz DER 2Kp"
"Grz IR 128"

Anyone.

Any close-up of it would be even better.

Gerd

Die Ufz(Unteroffiziere) der 2.Kp

GRZ..? IR 128

That's for sure:

"The coporals( sergeants) of the 2nd company"
GRZ-? " IR (Infantrie Regiment) 128 "

Thank you again, there is no doubt the one abreviation is Grz, I have quadruple checked it.

It is the first one that I can not quite make out the Ue_z, or Ufiz. Would that translate to Unterofficier?

I am thinking of cleaning it to get a better look.

Uffze is the shortform of Unteroffiziere(plural)

Regarding your question,i would say yes.

Grz = Grenz. Grenz = border. In reference to a Grenz battalion.

Nice piece. Smile Congrats.

It´s very hard to see but imo it says Gr2 which is the abbrev. of "Gruppe 2", therefore 2nd group of IR 128.

Jim emailed me photos of the inscription. I worked on them in photoshop. Here are they.

Wotan: I think it is Grz and not Gr2.
