Am trying to glean some info on this gentleman, in conjunction with this grouping posted here

1st photo :' Me as artillery leader of the 1st cannon of the emplacement --the same we had to give up after the Russian attack on 28th July 1916.--Photo taken on 4th July 1916 .'
2nd photo : '24th April 1917--Front emplacement at Sallemaine ?(near Leon ) .Photo taken the day of the award of the Iron Cross 1st Class to me .'
I assume from this that the 1st phot was taken at the Russian front and the 2nd at the Western front in France .
