Who know this piece? So far I have been told Bund, SA Marine, and Navy Pioneer. I have no idea.

I feel if not a fantasy item then modern Bundeswehr. Have not till now seen this badge.
Looks like it would be for a naval construction unit.

It looks well made and is probably a trade BADGE for something like a stoker - who once used a shovel to feed the boilers.

Many trade or branch badges are based on tradition, not what the world is today. Look at US Army Signal Corps insignia (Signal flags) or the MPs (crossed flintlocks) or Ordnance (old grenade) etc etc.

Also fantasy items usually have guns, skulls, SS runes, or exiting stuff ... not shovels.

Try looking through Northern European navies trade badges.

Dave

Sorry, I meant to say trade badge or award.

Could the 120 mean Franz Petzl of "Wien"?

It could.

I never was deep into Kriegsmarine trade badges. I checked Weimar with no luck then checked Imperial.

Look at the Oberfeuermeistersmatt. We have a title now we need to nail down the era, and why it's circled with laurel leaves?

Confirmation from Germany today. This is indeed an Imperial German Navy veterans society badge worn in the 20's. The small size of the pin about 1 inch round helped with the decision. Interesting how items we have never seen before continue to turn up.

Joe,

Sincere thanks for popping this thread over and Vic, thank you for letting us have a look at this wonderful piece of hardware.

It doesn't surprise me to see something that some might consider obscure, (Kriegerverein, Regiments Abzeichen, etc.) to be of this quality. I'd imagine the owner of this piece was very proud to be seen sporting this diminutive beauty, the ladies probably ooo'ed
and ahhh'd all over the place, heck, even the guys would have been jealous and all wanted something as nice as this beautiful, miltary bauble.

A unit like this can be so much more appealing than some things with a big ol' swaz ...

Truly a great insignia with lots of history and tradition.

Regards,

Bill
