Gents,

As some of my friends know I've added German animals of all-types to my collecting interests some years back - wood, ceramics/porcelain, bronze, metal or whatever, as long as it's well done I like it ... There are just so many great European animal sculptors to enjoy, beginning with the French animaliers and not ending at all - as there are many present-day 'undiscovered' realist sculptors who are as good as any of the 1820's-ancients. Naturally, some of my favorites are the Allach 'big-ten,'
Prof Kärner being on top-of-the-heap, amongst many others, some were one-hit-wonders while others endured ...

This past week I picked up this piece that is sculpted by an unknown German artist that I thought you might enjoy with me ..?

I never saw anything like it in all the years of running around to antique shops and such - carved solid marble, app. 200x200mm,
and weighs almost 15 pounds, the falcon is signed A. Rüschelberger, (fic)? - 1068 VIII /89

From the looks of the piece, I wouldn't be surprised if the date were truly and correctly 1889? The patina and the taxidermist's glass eyes reflect that age. The marble has been originally hand-tinted into two primary colors, further enhancing the natural veining of the stone. It has a very subtle and soft look about it, but the animal is still very powerful and vibrant despite the muted tones.

Needless to say, I like it very much and it has found a good home here with my other eagles and boids, tings, etc ... Smile

Best regards and good collecting to all!

Bill
