I know the history of the SMS Emden, pretty impressive WWI Raider. Can anybody tell me if this is a common Commemorative medal? What is it worth? Please give me your opinions, Thanks, CHUCK

Chuck,
I'd say this is a fairly rare one you have, made by the artist H. Zeigler. Normally this commemorative is found by itself, without the locket and chain, which was most like custom-made for the owner to hold this example. There's one in the British Maritme Museum collection, which leads me to believe that there aren't many examples in circulation. Here's their description of the exact same piece: Medal commemorating Captain Karl von Müller (1873-1923) and the cruiser 'Emden'. Obverse: Bust of Captain von Müller in uniform (three-quarter left). Legend: 'FREGATTENKAPITÄN VON MÜLLER.' Reverse: Within a band enclosing legend starboard broadside view of SMS 'Emden' under steam; 'S . M . S . EMDEN' above, below the arms of the city of Emden and '1914'. Legend: 'EINE . NEUE . STÄRKERE . EMDEN . WIRD . ERSTEHEN . W . I . R.' (A new, stronger 'Emden' will arise. W.I.R.) As for a price I'd venture a guess that it's worth at least as much as a good TR Luftwaffe badge, possibly more..? If the case is original to the piece, considerably more. I hope this gives you enough to go on and further research this outstanding medal. Thanks for sharing this fine piece with us. Kind regards! Bill |
