I finally found an HJ! At a garage sale! I hope?
Scabbard is steel(magnetic),no lip. The emblem doesn't move, but I know that doesn't mean much, the emblem and fit looks right. Lots of wear. Blade is sharpened. Hefty feel to it. Not in the best of shape, but I find what I find and if it's cheap like me I take what I can get. Now I have to find one with a motto.... Is it a good one? Thanks for all the Help.

Can't make out the trademark. Is it H&F Lauterjung?

Looks good to me. This is the first HJ I have seen with that particular transistional Lauterjung TM, so I assume it's pretty rare. Would like Russ to comment.

Nice looking knife - can you post a close-up of the maker mark?

Here you go. No RZM, motto or date. Just maker marked. Where does it fit in on the HJ list? Sorry for the bad picture...Thanks once again.

Mikee

Is there any sign of there having been a motto? Being just maker marked, I would think it likely that it had one to start with.

Nope, not a trace of their ever being a motto. When I picked it up, thats the first thing that came to mind was why in the heck doesn't it have a motto or a trace of one. This isn't normal for an early HJ,is it?

I agree, I don't believe this to be 'normal' for a maker marked only HJ, but then again, no real reason to think it didn't happen either. The blade looks to have been heavily cleaned on the obverse, and has some pitting. If there was a motto, perhaps it has just been polished away over the years?

Russell,
Thanks for your quick replies and help. Dang that's to bad about the motto and that seems to be the best reason. Heavily cleaned and then sharpened at some point in time. Here is another picture, same sharpening marks on both sides of the blade...I don't really keep up with prices. IYO how much is it worth now due to the removal of the motto? Thanks.

Mikee, pricing is difficult as you'd probably get a different answer from everyone you asked. I'm not familiar with this maker mark on an HJ but it looks as though Dons may know something more about it, which may affect the price, particularly if it is not often seen. Hopefully, he'll come back in on this.

I think its a general tendency seen "Motto"
HJ,s that the etch seems to very light with
little depth and subject therefore to getting
polished out over time.IMO Roll Eyes

Great job with the photos by the way. Photoing is quite the art form. JR has completely mastered it.

can you show a photo of the scabbard hanger Smile

the knife should have a rzm, it has a ricasso so that points to it might being a trans or a late period, if it was late no motto anyway... ive seen that logo but with germany underneath. i have one by the same maker with a diff style logo, also has a design, similary positioned on the ricasso... i therefore would look into that being possibly very late produced or very early post 45, and then they added the germany to the logo as time went on in post war production

look carefully at the grip plates, how is the fit and the rivets, do they fit well? the pic seems to show they are poss slightly too small (grips) if the rivets are managled, messed with that might indicate they've been placed on a post war knife.

grips match up very well almost perfect in most cases, it would be worth looking more carefully incase it is later produced than we think...

Mike is spot on there.
I would like to see more closer photos of the grips (both sides), to see the rivets better.

No rush is recommended when dealing with kinda minty/rare variations knives. It is not the same as an honest "all good" salty example, and usually minnor things are not always noticed, minnor but important keys to determine a fake from an original.

I need to be more active in this forum, i always forget to browse it and usually see things when my buddies link me to it.
Well, since now, i'll enter more often to this sub-forum, i love HJs. Smile Some people already know me from WAF, my nick there is the same.

Santiago

More closeups for ya. Doesn't look mangled or messed with, but then again I'm no expert.
