Now that is interesting !!

I bought and used a similar one in 1963 in the Swiss Alps, but that is the first one I have ever seen with leather covers for the working edges and a DRGM stamp.

I suspect that to the right collector of mountain division artifacts, you might have a winner.

Regards,
Dave

Identical to the US Army issue ice axe issued as late as the seventies and possibly beyond. I have one hanging in my garage with the insignia of the Northern Warfare Training Center on the haft.

The design is classic and unchanging. Mine had a platic cover for the spike at the end, but no covers for the top.

Nats,

That is a good question. It would depend on whether the Nazi era patent applications survived.

The other question would be whether patents granted (or applied for) by German firms in the 1933-45 era had any validity after May 1945.

You should be able to find something on the Internet in German.

Nats,

Stubail or stubai is one of the makers found on these and a bunch are out there, manions sold many in the 80-90 dollar range, but the tough thing to get is the leather cover and bottom cap. If I saw one with SS and RZM markings I would probably run however. Good wall hangers and I tried to grab one several years ago but the dealer wanted a 1000.00 which is ridiculous.

This would make a nice addition to a G-33 mountain carbine, which is why I wanted it at the time.

Best,

Kris

Nats, hi here is a bit more info for you maybe?

http://daggers.infopop.cc/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/97573/...283080482#9283080482

sorry for the caps but back then my eyes were not the best Winksurgery helps wonders man!
Since that thread 4 years+ ago. I have looked for a axe or ax sp is your choice. I am always talking with Chip Gambino and if he ever found one it would have found a home. Gailens info was also great. These things are are around and Wa marked, I am sure the swiss ones found a way into service for the mtn. troops. They exist and I am not saying ones like this didnt see service. But real german produced examples are around. Kinda like a luft machete, not many collectors like them and many were discarded. hence the rarity.BTW if I remember right Gailen stated that the covers were also WaA marked but i am not sure of either numbers. take care, Bret

Also to add: I dont think you would see these RZM marked no proof on this just my opinion. And as for SS proofs on them, well if any were SS marked they would be surfacing now with the price of SS items on the way to the moon. But i doubt any were SS proofed, again no proof of that just my opinion. Bret

I just picked one up at the MAX. I was looking for one and only saw 3 at the show. It is marked with the "stubai" mark on the "head" and "DRGM" stamped into the wooden handle. Looks great with the rest of the collection. From these stamps is it possible to know if it was Swiss or German made?
