This is a Naval General Service Campaign medal, it was originally issued with a striped crimson & white ribbon. 7,127 issued to the navy and 37 issued to the army for services rendered in the Persian Gulf 1909-1914. My 2007 edition of Spinks lists the value for the Navy version $237-$297 & $990-$1584 for the army due to the limited numbers issued. I have no idea how the erasing affects value and as far as I am aware there is no way to tell whether this was an army or navy issue now the name has gone!. Paul, does the erasing affect the value to this extent?.
absolutely I can see the the thining. And as you may know much of the value on a commonwealth medal is based on the recipients rank and unit or trade. So the value is halved right off PLUS the damage of the rubbing so my estimate is valid but a tade low maybe

Paul, Thanks for the info, I have Spinks price guide for information only and I am not a medal collector per'se but do come across them from time to time during other dealings so its always handy to have. I have learned something today and appreciate the explanation, sorry Robert if I got your hopes up!.
I also have the spinks book and agree it is the bible for commonwealth gongs but like everything must be taken with a grain of salt as with the pricing which is for gem quality and does not discuss naming but does get into the bars very well. And then you have to find someone who collects and is willing to pay the book.
