Uruguay was officially neutral during WWII although in February 1945 (when the tied turned against Germany) Uruguay changed its policy and joined the Allies. As I recall it also became a haven for former Nazis after the war ended. When I read the article I bristled at this quote:

"There are ethical limits on the promotion of Nazi symbols in museums, so who are the potential buyers of these icons, if not neo-Nazis?" asked Miguel Esmoris, director of the National Heritage Commission.

According to Señor Esmoris, only museums and neo-nazis buy Third Reich memorabilia. I'm sure the members of this forum disagree with this negative stereotype of the Third Reich collector. It will be interesting to see who, if anyone, will be allowed to buy this eagle and the other salvaged parts of the Graf Spee.
