Hi All:

I thought it would be interesting to inventory all of the "Full Röhm" SS daggers whose original SS owners are currently identified by the SS serial number on the dagger or through other documentation. Below is the list of those that I know of so far:

SS No. 2924 (dagger is not numbered), SS-Sturmführer Ludwig Butz, Wittman pp. 65-65,
( Exploring the Dress Daggers and Swords of the German SS)

SS No. 3798, SS-Standartenführer Helmut Schulz, Wittman, p. 69

SS No. 4758, SS-Brigadeführer Theodor Wisch (LAH), Wittman, pp. 80-81

SS No. 8689, SS-Hauptsturmführer Helmut Greve (LAH), Midwestern US Collection & just identified

SS No. 17 827, SS-Obersturmführer Hans Spitt (LAH), Wittman, p. 70

SS No. 25 824, SS-Scharführer Erich Brauer (LAH), Kelbaugh Collection

SS No. 28 967, SS-Sturmbannführer Helmutt Schmitt, just sold by Lakesidetrader. You can see this one at http://www.lakesidetrader.com/SS.html

SS No. 33 062, SS-Sturmbannführer Heinz Linden (LAH), Eastern European Collection

SS No. 59 382, SS-Sturmbannführer Hans Brünning (LAH), Wittman, p. 70-71

Are there other identified examples that any of you can add?

It also interesting to note for the first time that of these nine, six of these people had been in Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler and presumably among the most zealous of the zealots. What was it with these naughty Nazis in particular who thought they were above the law?

Enjoy!

I own the Hans Bunning dagger and it is the only one awarded to a DKiG combat winner that has surfaced so far. Bunning won his DKiG during the retreat of the WIKING Div (5th SS) from Russia. He saved hundreds of German SS troops by keeping his artillery in place many hours after General Gille told him to withdraw, protecting the retreating Das Reich, Wiking and Wallonian SS.

He was a good man and not a terrible SS bad guy. Just a soldier doing his job and spent his career on the Eastern Front except for the beginning when he was one of the first members of the SS Leibstandarte Adolph Hitler. He was an insurance company director before his death. Overall, an honorable soldier caught up in the times. No war crimes.

Thanks Mark for more on the Bünning story. You can add SS-Sturmbannführer Heinz Linden, who owned the "Full Röhm" No. 33 062, to the naughty DKiG winners which he too received for combat service in Russia 1944. This one is owned my one of my research clients from Russland.

I didn't know that this was a "full Rohm" dagger when I was doing the research on Karl Kastner. Now we have 10 naughty Nazis. Here is his personnel record card that documents Kastner's receipt of the dagger.

Here is the section of the personnel record that documents Kastner's receipt of his Röhm dagger. Though it is partially obscured by an attachment, it reads "Inhaber des Ehren-dolches der SA (SS)." Since the "ja" has not been lined out, we know Kastner had received one.

With time and persistence I believe more of the numbered but unknown "Full Röhm's" can yet be identified. Any more of those already identified out there?

Ross:

I have #3681 issued to an Obersturmfuhrer Gerhard Feldmann, who was head of the SS Pioniere Battalion within the 4th SS Polizei Panzer Grenadier Division.

He fell in the Balkans in 1944.

Prior to the 4th SS, he was with Florian Geyer, Das Reich (1942) and Deutschland (1934-42)

He was an early convert to Nazism, being given the SS Zivil Pin number 1625.

Hi Gents:

Sorry for not replying sooner. Yes, I'll get some pics of the dagger up as soon as I can. I work with the gentleman who owns this piece. He also purchased the model '36 that belonged to Hans Baur. Not too many pieces in his collection, but definitly focused.
