Looks authentic to me. These were very late war produced and hardly issued. There is an era photo of a man wearing one of these during the defense of Berlin in Mike Beaver's book. The reason that so many of these are in unissued condition is because they weren't issued and worn and found in depots. Who knows, in about 20 years or so somebody might start reproducing them. But for now these are fairly safe. Good catch.
