It never ceases to amaze me that things turn up that I have never seen in 40+ years of collecting German items. I just got this from my house sale lady a unusual cap that appears to be made just like a typical German side cap. It has the Admiral Scheer type tally but the cap is made of velvet and is a small size. Could this be something for a girlfriend or child, being the reason for the smaller size? Would appreciate your thoughts.

Dear Alpha24,

A very interesting cap.

When German Ships were launched there was often a large ceremony involved with bands, speeches and appearences of state/military figures.

During these events there were vendors who sold souvenir pennants, badges and caps with the name of the ship being launched.

This was a cap for children following in the style of the "Keil" naval dress, considered fashionable during the period.

I have seen several such caps through the years with various ship titles.

Cheers
