An ordinary Political armband with a story behind it.
I was dealing with a flooded property in Wickford, ESSEX. The householder`s hobby was steam traction engines and he had a few in his yard. The guy was in his late 80`s and we got to talking about hobbies and I mentioned my collecting.
He told me a story about one of his neighbours, a man he had known for over 50 years. His name was John Inglis. I have not done any research yet but I have seen his school leaving certificate.
This armband was given to John Inglis, late of wickford, by Adolf Hitler in person. John attended the 1936 Olympics possibly as a scout. He had his hand shook by Hitler and was presented with this armband, which he was asked to wear.
He left school in 1932 aged around 14, he had no relatives and when he passed away his house in Wickford was left to the salvation army.
Before he died though he gave some personal items to his long term friend Mr Bullwood. they were in a box along with some flags, some woodblock carvings and a small cotton napkin. White with a black border that he had kept from a dinner that Adolf Hitler attended.
A couple of small insignificant pieces of cloth if not for the story behind them. I often wonder what stories some of our collected treasures would tell if they could communicate.
After all it is just an armband!!!!!!! isn't it?
