I sure would like to be present when something like that is found. What a present and glimpse into the past. Outstanding!

How did you know exactly where to dig?

Mark,

it was sent to me by my friend from Slovakia.. I have no idea who found it, but pretty sure it is metal detecting find. You simply spend hundredths hours and walk hundredth kilometres through meadows, fields and forrests.. and sometimes... you have the luck!

I wonder if the smoked some of the cigars while sipping on the Jamacian rum?? Both appear to be in usable condition!!
As an aside: I think this is an example of a tunic you can guarantee hasn't been messed with.

Looks like the tunic (shoulderboards) belonged to a medical or veternary officer so the rum was probably for "medicinal" purposes!

The tunic is surely Gerhard Paihler´s....

some one has a great research project if they want to take it. Imagine if you manage to reach the family and show them this coffer!

It's amazing that these were put in a box with no airtight seal for over 60 years, and there's not the slightest hint of mold or moisture damage on any of the cloth or paper....A find that defies belief!

Seeing the box in perfect condition I'd say that seal on the box is the secret! With that seal unbroken the box could have stayed another 60 yrs. buried and the contents would have still been perfect..

Great photos, and find!

Eek What an amazing find. I'd be more excited opening this than any Christmas present I've ever gotten. The shoulderboards look to be Transport and not medical. Any chance you can get more photos?
Sorry, checked my book and the cyfer is for Administrative Service officer.

Jan,

That's about the coolest thing I've seen in some time. My Pop's outfit was captured in Königsberg and then off to prison near Moscow for five years. Smile Schatura to be exact.

Fantastic!
