A fellow Forum member (Anythingww2) found this link and I thought it would be of enough interest to post:

What an excellent story Jim. I can understand the pride of true military men when they are able to put together a plan and escape.
They should make a movie about this one if they already haven't. Jim |

Jim m: Very interesting story. There must have been several more escapes of German prisoners from US located POW camps. I remember the last escapee surrendered in the early 90s. He applied for and was subsequently granted US citizenship.

Jim & Manfred:
I'm glad you enjoyed this story. I have been told that several of the German prisoners returned to Arizona with their families after they were repatriated. There has been talk over the years about making this into a movie but this hasn't happened so far. For those of you that have never been here this is what Papago Park, which was near the internment camp, looks like. It is a popular in-city hiking and recreation area today. Jim ![]() |

Interesting story. Cannot remember where I heard it before. Good to read it again. One of the big problems for POWs, other than the size of the USA, was American customs and mannerisms. Most Europeans could fit in anywhere in Europe, but not the USA. Germany was a closed, propaganda fed society and there was no TV to mimic !
Tell me more about this 90 year old POW ! |
