In Tom Johnsons WW2 german war booty, Pub 2002, Pages 73 & 107 show silver spoons and a silver hunting bowl and are captioned as "recently discovered in an underground storage area on the grounds of Carinhall". Does anyone know any more about this in terms of who, what else was found or how discovered? I'm surprised we heard nothing more.

Hi BarryG,

This is surprising to me also. I don't have that War Booty book. Before I comment can you post photos of the items here?

Regards,
Dane

Dane, sorry but I'm technologically deprived, no scanner and no computer ability. Maybe someone else will do it for us.

BarryG-

Maybe your Göring topic should have been posted in the Miscellaneous Militaria and Regalia Forum. That is where you normally find topics related to Third Reich silver. By comparison, The Period History Forum doesn't get many views and replies.

I suggest that you move this topic to the Miscellaneous Militaria and Regalia Forum.

Regards, Dane

I was at the site of the former Karinhall one year after the Wende - Unification , since my Cousin lives nearby . At that time every meter on every next meter you could see a hole in the ground where people had dug into the ground to may be find something based on a reading from a metal detector ! Well , based on this , I feel every "New" discovery , particular when it says it came from an underground vault, should be taken with a grain of salt . I also doubt that there any underground vaults , since the watertable is very high here and a big lake is right next to the Karihall location ! Just my 2 cents on this , Bernd .

I would have to agree with bernd. I have also been to the site, and it is very hard to imagine any private individual with a shovel finding an underground storage area ... And if this was found by excavation with machinery, certainly this would have been big news.
This site http://hitlernews.cloudworth.com/ is very good for some pretty comprehensive info ... They even report when old bombs are found, there is nothing about this claim here, nor does anything come up on a google news search.

Barry, "recently".. The book was pub. in 2002. It probably took a few years to put together then print,,and that recent could have meant as recent as 20 years ago! Big Grin Wink....

Gaspare, you're probably right about "recent". I hadn't thought about in that way, and Skynyrd, thanks for the web link. Very interesting stuff there to spend some time on.

I have the "Booty" book and that is the only place I read that a underground store room was found at Carinhall.
Maybe someone should give T.J. a call for clarification? Wink
