This was published in the late 20s by German Jewish veterans and Jewish associations to counter the rising antisemitic rhetoric from the Workers Party and Hitler and cohorts.

More on the subject can be found on the net, or here on Wiki.

Alot of people forgot about the contributions and sacrifices the German Jewish community had made in the name of patriotism. Many forgot about that during the 30s and 40s. Interestingly, a decent number of German Jewish served in the Wehrmacht during the Nazi regime. General Milch as of Jewish descent and Goring had made the "I decide who's Jewish" statment. Bryan Riggs wrote the book "Hitlers Jewish Soldiers" on the topic. Probably worth a read.

If anyone has seen "The Shanghai Ghetto", you'll see the interview with a Jewish German man who was able to escape Germany in the 30s' to Shanghai. His father served with distinction during the first world war, and was reluctant to leave Germany when he had the opportunity because he considered himself a patriotic vet. His son went onto say that his father, the vet, did not believe the antisemetic beliefs of Hitler posed any type of real threat and because he had served Germany in the 1st world war, he would not face violence or subjugation fromthe German government.

If I recall correctly, he was not able to leave and subsequently died in one of the camps.

I knew an old German man who told me the following;

He was German, but was also Jewish. He considered himself German, not Jewish, and his father had been an Officer in the First World War. When Hitler came to power he too told his father that they should leave Germany. His father had won the Iron Cross 1st Class in WWI, and thought that he was safe. The son left Germany and went to Palestine, later joining the RAF as part of a ground crew. His father was arrested, and sent to Dachau. His mother called on a friend of his father who had also been an Officer in WWI, and asked for his help. The friend had become an Officer in the Third Reich, and had known Goering in WWI. According to my friend, he responded to the wife's plea for help by calling on Goering and asking his help. Goering then wrote a letter that the Wife used to get her husband out of Dachau. Then they left Germany through Holland, and later made it to England. Several other family members did not have the "right" connections, and were later killed in various camps. My friend then gave me several hat pins that he had collected in Palistine from different countries in the British Empire, and one hat badge from an Afrika Corps pith helmet. Even in Nazi Germany it was "who you knew"!

If you know the fellow at all from WAF, his story is about the same. I don't want to metion his name. If you know him, you'll know whom I'm speaking of. His grandfather served in the army during the 1st War, was decorated, and was a "nationalist German". When the reichs momentum moved forward, he still didn't accept what was happening till the knight of broken glass. He was later interned at Dachau, but was able to leave and also make his way to Palestine.

I am also an IDF collector thusly know people in Israel. Many of thier stories are truly amazing. Hats off to them for making it and persevering.
