What are the red flags to look for in the authentication process of a regimental stein? I have had this stein for a long, long time and have never been sure of it's authenticity. The guy that sold it to me was a supposed pro.

Thanks in advance.....

Hi Roland,

Thank you for looking it over for me. I'm glad to hear it is authentic, I've been curious for so many years.. It is in excellent condition, no chips or cracks at all.. The cannon is solid, non-functional.. Are some of the cannons functional? If you would like, I'll try to get some detailed macro images of the garrison town ect... I can not remember what I paid for it, what do you think it might be worth?

The $300 reference is about the cost of a Life Membership to the MAX Show organization. The MAX show has been rapidly declining in popularity for many reasons...

Fantastic. Take to the poor old lonely firearms forum. I have 2 byf44's that are booth vet bringbacks. Not a huge serial number difference, but a lot of quality differences.

I have some pics over there, but no close ups. I am having some kind of javascript problem, or something. I cannot click on the regular reply tab, only the quick one, and I cannot start a topic.

I am not sure what the problem is.

Günther...yes some of the later issues had functioning cannons and would shoot a tooth pick with a spring. Obviously we are talking about the 2nd Bavarian Art. Regiment. It should say right on the Stein were it was garrisoned...München perhaps? On a good day at auction it could bring $650.-700.00.
A lot of times cursive letter (like the names under the grip) are bad news...but not in this case. If ever you see cursive letters anywhere else on the stein...that is a red flag...König Ludwig IInds picture on the lithopane is always good...if you see a young ladie taking of here cloth...well those were made for the GI market...there are a number of other reasons why this is a very good original stein...to numerous to mention here...take my word for it...you have a nice Stein...Prosit...Roland.
BTW...red flags...a pistol grip bump in the handle is almost always a dead give away. If you noticed yours is smooth. A cylindrial body...by that I mean, if you continued the vertical wall and they met somewhere above the stein in a point...well that is always bad news...notice if you continued the vertical wall the would stay parallel to one another, and NOT meet. Bingo...a very good sign...but like always there are a few exeptions even to that rule.

Roland,

Thank you again my friend, for all the information...

Here's what I have:

Second Foot Artillery Regt.
Tenth Company, King's Bayr.II. Garrison Metz.
Served 1902 - 1904

Is Res:Gefr: Bayerl at the very center bottom the recipient's name?

The quality is simply amazing......

Hello Gunther, that is a very nice stein. Foot Artillery ones are a bit harder to find than Field Artillery.

Does any-one know who the lady with the Lion beside her on the front is called ? I do not think it is "Germania" so who is it ?

Gunther would it be possible to get a clearer picture of her please ?

I think steins are very under-rated by Militaria collectors. Good value for money in my opinion,

Chris

Chris...that I think is the godess of victory...guessing here...she appears on a chariot in Munich...but I will look it up to be sure...Roland.

I guess that would make her "Viktoria"...no relation to Queen Victoria Big Grin
