Some makers are easier to determine by the motto placement on the obverse of the blade, that the piece is a Rohm or Ground Rohm dagger. Eickhorn is probably the most noted, and a bit more easily detected than some of the other manufacturing firms. Is there a way to detect a Boker Rohm (Ground Rohm) dagger from a non-Boker, just by observing the motto side of the blade ?

I'll take a guess Big Grin
Maybe the pimpling in the motto is a giveaway, but I really don't know if this is only on Bökers. Seem to remember that this pimpling is also observed on some other (but later) manufacturers?

All the best,

Hey JR!

From what I've seen on Bokers, their Rohms also have the motto further from the crossguard, like Eickhorn & Klaas. Boker probably has the most distinctive motto, and as far as I know, they've used it continuously through their production unlike other makers like Eickhorn who used 2 styles.

I don't know if it's an absolute though, just haven't handled enough of them to know if it's a firm rule. From the blade you show, I would have pegged that as a standard Boker... Something you've discovered? Razz

Can't fool you guys, that for sure. And Red nailed it right on. On a standard non Rohm Boker blade, the motto is just ever so slightly closer to the crossguard than the Rohm version. The distance is very small being just 4-5 mm. And definitely would be a tough call without both examples in hand. Herder is also the same way being ever so slight, but again separated by just a few millimeters
