Hey guys, I was referred to this forum by gunboards. I have an early SS dagger in my possession that I would like to find some info on. The serial number is 17314, pictures and the story can be seen here: http://forums.gunboards.com/showthread.php?t=135599

Thanks in advance!

First in reference to your post in the other forum, the dagger isn't fake. Its 100% legit. Looks like a decent early Eichorn SS. Seem to look like a small double oval Eichorn ground Roehm SS. Ground Roehm referring to the fact that it once had an inscription on the back from Ernst Roehm who was murder during the "Night of the long knives", the purge of the SA leadership. After that night it was ordered to be removed. A lot of times you see the maker mark slightly hit during the removal. It looks a little rough but many like them in this condition vs. the minty stuff. It gives it character you know. Though it does diminish the value which would be between $2300-2600 range maybe slightly less. Though the right person you could possible get more? Anyways I like it. Hope this information helps. Maybe someone else can check the officers list for that SS number, with such an early dagger it may be in it? Take care.

If you look at the spine of the dagger you will notice a slight wave that indicates the blade has been ground slightly. Its most likely a factory grind. BTW most double oval eichorn's are ground roehm's.

Yep, I agree with Adam, everything you'd expect to see on an early SS ground Rohm. The number could make for some interesting reading if Ross can track it down...

Wow, I had no idea. Thank you for everyone's replys. Does anyone know what the number "2" on the hilt means? I never noticed it until yesterday. I appreciate everyone's help, now I just need to get my hands on a list of serial numbers.

The 2 stamped into the crossguard is a factory assembler's number ranging from 0 to 9. These are seen on early Eickhorn daggers including Rohms.

Thanks for the information guys. A member on Gunboards has stated that the SS number is not in any of the publications. Is there anywhere else I can look?
