I'm sure others will chime in but I understand there are 3 basic types of chained SS daggers, the type 1 with plated steel fittings, the type 2 with nickle-silver fittings and the field conversions where a center band and chain were added to an existing M33. The field conversions are a tough sell because they are hard to prove original.

Both type I and type II chained daggers appear in different variations depending on when they were manufactured in the TR period. The earliest type II chained daggers had solid nickel fittings and those should have painted scabbards. Most were made later in the TR period and were plated with anodized scabbards. Overall, the type II plated pieces are more common than the type I. Many mid period type I chained daggers have solid nickel crossguards mated to a scabbard with plated fittings (which all type I's are). Some even have a gau mark. Most often seen is "Sa". The bottom line is there are many correct combinations of materials for SS chained daggers depending on when they were made.

There are also 2 different center/ramp scabbard fittings that go along with the chain types. The earlier usually with type 1 chain has no burnishing (or darkening) of the background. The second type fitting has rolled edges and is usually found with an anodized scabbard and is normally fastened with 2 screws insted of one as in the first type. The second type will normally have a darkened background.
I am not saying this is always certain because I have only seen less than 2 dozen of these so please correct me if I am wrong.
